TNC22: Q-Factor: Real-time data transfer optimization

Jeronimo Bezerra presented the “Q-Factor: enabling host tuning using In-band Network Telemetry” in a session called Data-Driven Networking at TNC22. TNC is a large research and education networking conference that attracts a diverse audience of over 800 participants from more than 70 countries, representing national and regional research and education networks, schools and universities, technology providers, and many of the world’s most exciting scientific projects. Q-Factor is a framework that enables high-speed data transfer tuning and optimization based on real-time network state information provided by programmable data planes and network sockets. Q-Factor addresses data transfer tuning and optimization processes by changing how network endpoints, including Data Transfer Nodes (DTNs), consume network state information … Read More

Trusted CI webinar: Q-Factor: Real-time data transfer optimization

Members of FIU and ESnet are presenting the talk, Q-Factor: Real-time data transfer optimization leveraging In-band Network provided by P4 data planes, on Monday, September 27th at 11 am (Eastern). Our presenters are Jeronimo Bezerra, Richard Cziva, and Dr. Julio Ibarra.

Q-Factor is a framework to enable data transfer optimization based on real-time network state information provided by programmable data planes. Communication networks are critical components of today’s scientific workflows. Researchers leverage long-distance ultra-high-speed networks to transfer massive data sets from acquisition sites to processing sites and share measurements with scientists worldwide. However, while network bandwidth is continuously increasing, most data transfers are unable to efficiently utilize the added capacity due to inherent limitations of parameter settings of the network transport protocols and the lack of network state information at the end hosts … Read more

ESnet and FIU Receive NSF Award for Q-Factor

This framework enables high-speed data transfer optimization based on real-time programmable data plane telemetry

Energy Science Network (ESnet) and Florida International University (FIU) received a two-year National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure research grant for “Q-Factor: A framework to enable high-speed data transfer optimization based on real-time network state information provided by programmable data planes.” (NSF Award Abstract #2018754)

As the trend towards data-intensive research continues, scientists and campus IT experts are investing significant resources to facilitate the efficient movement of large datasets between geographically distributed sites. Because many university campus networks are not currently configured to support the data movement requirements of data-intensive science, campus researchers require new tools to address poor network performance … Read More

FIU and ESnet receive NSF grant for high-speed data transfer research project

Florida International University (FIU) and Energy Science Network (ESnet) have been awarded a two-year, $760,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure research grant for Q-Factor, a framework that enables high-speed data transfer optimization.

Q-Factor, a concept developed by FIU and ESnet, will help automate the data transfer speed between computers at end points. The technology, for example, will help increase the speed with which an office computer (one end point) receives a large data file from a web server (another end point). This optimization will allow for smoother data transfer across a high-speed network … Read More
